Welcome to the 5th International Conference on Regional Development (ICRD) “Understanding Regional Urbanization and Planning in the Global Southâ€. With the successful story of the previous conferences, the upcoming 5th ICRD will be held on 23rd – 24th July 2024, in Semarang, the capital city of Central Java Province, Indonesia. This conference will be hosted by the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Engineering, Diponegoro University.
In recent decades, the Global South has experienced a profound and complex transformation in the form of rapid urbanization. This phenomenon, driven by a combination of factors, including population growth, rural-to-urban migration, and economic progress, has given rise to dynamic and diverse urban landscapes. The expansion of cities in the Global South has been nothing short of remarkable, leading to the emergence of megacities, bustling metropolitan areas, and vibrant urban centers, each with unique challenges and opportunities. This sweeping urbanization trend represents more than a demographic shift. This signifies profound social, economic, and environmental transformations, with significant implications for the regions involved and the global community at large. As these cities expand and evolve, they face a range of intricate challenges that span the spectrum from housing shortages, inadequate infrastructure, and environmental degradation to social inequality, governance issues, and vulnerability to climate change. This transformation is both an expression of economic progress and a reflection of deep-seated issues that must be addressed.
The conference serves as a vital forum for identifying potential solutions, highlighting best practices, and initiating dialogue that transcends disciplinary and sectoral boundaries. By uniting these diverse voices and perspectives, the conference aspires to craft a roadmap for equitable, resilient, and sustainable urban development in the Global South. The ultimate goal is to create a collaborative framework that empowers communities, fosters economic growth, and safeguards the environment, while enhancing the quality of life of millions of people across the region. The journey towards sustainable urbanization in the Global South is fraught with challenges, but it is also brimming with potential, innovation, and hope. This conference sought to harness the energy and insight of those committed to shaping a better urban future.
The ICRD welcomes the submission of papers to all areas of regional development related to urban and regional development. We look forward to seeing you at the conference and experience Semarang City.
